There are many different types of material and liquid that can combust in the event of a fire. The fire extinguisher classification system makes it easy to know what type of extinguisher to use on a certain type of fire. The following list explains the classes and types of fire that they are suitable for:
Class A: Solid Combustibles
Suitable for fighting fires from solid combustibles such as wood, paper, textiles, straw, coal and so forth.
Class B: Flammable Liquids
Suitable for fighting flammable liquids such as oils, fats, petrol, tar, alcohol and paraffin.
Class C: Flammable Gasses
Suitable for fighting fires involving flammable gasses including gas, acetylene, hydrogen, methane etc.
Class D: Flammable Metals
Suitable for fighting fires involving flammable metals such as aluminium, potassium, magnesium, lithium, sodium and their alloys.
Class F: Cooking Oils & Fats
Suitable for fighting fires involving hot fats and oils in kitchens. The wet chemicals form a layer to smother the fire.
Electrical Fires
Suitable for fighting electrical fires including appliances, fuse boxes etc.
Types of Fire Extinguisher
There are many different types of fire extinguishers that are designed to tackle different types of fires. They include the following:
Water
Water extinguishers are designed to fight Class A fires that involve solid combustible materials such as textiles, paper and wood. These extinguishers are not suitable for fighting electrical fires.
AFFF Foam
AFFF foam extinguishers are suitable for extinguishing Class A and B fires involving flammable liquids or gasses.
Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguishers are designed to fight Class B and electrical fires.
ABC Powder
These extinguishers can be used on Class A, B, C and electrical fires. Due to their versatility, they offer the ideal solution for mixed fire risk areas.
Water Mist
Water mist extinguishers are versatile because the mist reduces the oxygen content, thus helping to extinguish the flames. This type of extinguisher can be used on Class A, B, C, F and electrical fires.
Wet Chemical
Suitable for fighting Class A and F fires.
